2008 Career Shadow Day

June 18, 2008 was the day that several Cairo High School students ventured into “the real world” of work.

Career Shadow, sponsored by the Southwest Georgia Technical College and Georgia Department of Labor, Cairo Career Center, Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee presented a special opportunity to upcoming Seniors at Cairo High School.

These students were placed “on the Job” in an area which they have expressed an area for their career path.  The career field ranged from medical to mechanical.

Grady General Hospital co-sponsored this event by hosting a luncheon for the students and employers.  Lunch was provided by the Pickle Patch of Cairo and was enjoyed by all.

This career shadowing gave students a first hand look at a career which they have been considering for their future.  Some of the comments were:  “I enjoyed getting to know the people, I think I might pursue a career in nursing, it made me more interested.”  The impact of the shadowing was so profound for one student, their comment was “This experience has made me come to a big decision that this will be something I would like to pursue.”  Another student indicated that his shadow experience was a learning event which he learned things he never knew.
The collaboration of  Southwest Georgia Technical College and the Georgia Department of Labor, Cairo Career Center, and the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee has proven again that it is a service to the young people of this area to have the opportunity to “shadow” employers and learn more about the careers for which they have possibility chosen.

Southwest Georgia Technical College also explained how to pursue their education in the area of their interest.

Cairo Career Center talked to the students about short term and long term projections and how to research their area for jobs that are in demand, plus research of salaries.

The partnership of Southwest Georgia Technical College and the Georgia Department of Labor, Cairo Career Center is strong and dedicated to serving and preparing our future workforce.
