AN INTERVIEW WITH
Barbara Jones and Patsy Carr
The Georgia Employer Committee would like to share with its viewers the EMR's who are vital to the success of the Local Committees throughout the State. This month we meet and talk with EMR Barbara Jones and Patsy Carr of the Dublin Career Center.
Tell us your name, your Career Center and how long you’ve been an EMR?
BJ-PC: - Barbara Jones and Patsy Carr
Dublin- Heart of Georgia Employer Committee
Dublin Career Center
.
What types of businesses or organizations make up your Employer Committee?
BJ-PC: - We have quite a variety. Our co chairs are Randy Jackson, Patient Care Coordinator of Bass Physical Therapy and Tiny Showers, HR Administrative Analyst of Rockwell Automation. We have members who are affiliated with banks, staffing agencies, warehousing/distribution centers, an electric membership corporation, manufacturing facilities, partner agencies such as RESA and JTU, the local chambers of commerce and a number of others.
What do you believe is unique about your Employer Committee?
BJ-PC: - Our relationship with our local Human Resources association. A large number of our committee members are also members of that association and it makes for an unbelievable networking situation.
What do you believe is your Employer Committee's biggest challenge for your area, regarding the workforce?
BJ-PC: - To have the luxury of coordinating the manpower for events with enough public Awareness and notoriety for our local workers to know that such a committee exists and the level of involvement we have with our community.
Why should I join your Employer Committee?
BJ-PC: - To be part of a progressive group who works tirelessly and effortlessly to promote the success of our industries, workers and community. Our community is somewhat small but growing and everyone knows everyone. We really have a great support system among our employers and agency partners. When we all come together, our close working relationship and the networking are our greatest assets.
How active is your Employer Committee working in your community?
BJ-PC: - We are very active as a committee and a number of our members are active in other civic clubs and serve on a variety of boards which gives us insight into how our committee can be of assistance to these other organizations and how they in turn can help us.
Has your Employer Committee received any awards or special recognition?
BJ-PC: - We were nominated last September at the annual Employer Committee State Conference in Savannah for Community Service Award of the Year, Project of the Year Award, and Committee of the Year Award.
What future trends does your Employer Committee see in employment needs in your area?
BJ-PC: - One of the major concerns if not the major concern of our committee is the lack of work ethics among our young people. We currently have a major project underway in conjunction with our area high school seniors throughout our three school systems to illustrate the impact this problem has on our workforce as they are the future workforce. Approximately 600 seniors are scheduled to participate in our ethics project which will promote interaction between employers, committee members, school counselors and students.
In the future, what would you most like to accomplish as an EMR?
BJ-PC: - To continue our partnership as EMR’s to provide the very best customer service to our employers and do all that we can to attract new employers to the Dublin-Laurens County area. There are several definitions of a “partner” in the dictionary. Our favorite is “One of the heavy timbers that strengthen a ship’s deck to support a mast”. We each represent one of those “timbers” that “strengthens” the “deck”. We are, by all definitions, a team committed to diligently market the services of the Georgia Department of Labor in support of our employers and our community.
