Atlanta Hawks Star Donates $7000 to JGG

Josh Smith is a 21 year old NBA player with the Atlanta Hawks. Quietly establishing himself as one of the NBA’s top young stars, Smith is poised to elevate his game to All-Star level following his emergence as the Hawks key performer during the absence of All-Star guard Joe Johnson. Selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 17th overall pick (first round ) in the 2004 NBA Draft.
Smith became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 300 career blocked shots on 3/22/06 against Philadelphia. He won the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk contest on All-Star weekend in Denver. Smith transferred to Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) for his senior year of high school after attending McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA for three years. He originally committed to play at Indiana University before declaring for the draft. As a senior at Oak Hill, Smith set a single-season school record for most points scored with 980. Smith received the Academic Award at Oak Hill for the highest grade point average maintained during the 2003-04 season.
On December 4, 2007 during halftime at an Atlanta Hawks game, Josh Smith accompanied by his father Mr. Pete Smith, presented a check in the amount of $7,000.00 to Commissioner Thurmond and members of the Jobs for Georgia Graduates Program from Benjamin E. Mays High School. Smith indicated that he believed in education and giving back to his community. He further commented that he learned about the Jobs for America’s Graduates National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, DC and presented the check to make it possible for some students to attend. Seven students from Benjamin E. Mays High School were able to attend the conference which was held in Washington, DC on December 6-8, 2007. On December 5, 2007 Jobs for America’s Graduates presented Josh Smith with the JAG National Leadership Award for his outstanding contribution.
